Budget-Friendly End-of-Summer Events for the Whole Family

Summer is winding down but adventures around Cabarrus are still amping up! With several weeks of the season left, it’s time to get your summer strategy in place to make as many memories as possible before Labor Day.

With back-to-school shopping coming soon, these family-friendly events offer lots of end-of-summer fun and ways to stretch your dollar — some are inexpensive, and others are even free.

Art Lab, Concord

When: Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2024, 10:30 a.m. -12:00 p.m.
Cost: $10 per student

Kids can tap into their creativity during Art Lab Gallery Tour & Crafts at the Cabarrus Arts Council. Designed for ages 6-16, this interactive experience includes a guided tour through the current exhibition in The Galleries. Then, students can participate in an I Spy activity.

Family Day is another event offered by the Cabarrus Arts Council that lets all ages experiences a full day of activities for free, including a performance from Criss Cross Mango Sauce! This event takes place from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024 with performances at 2 p.m. and crafts ending at 3 p.m.

Cook Out Summer Shootout, Concord

When: Tuesday, July 23, 2024 | Tuesday, July 30, 2024, 5:00 p.m.
Cost: Adults: $10 / Admission for kids 12 & under is free

Since June, Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Summer Shootout series has provided weeknight fun you won’t find anywhere else! Along with racing action on the frontstretch quarter-mile track featuring the future stars of motorsports, this family-friendly event has included everything from school bus races to celebrating Dads. Get in on the fun! The last Summer Shootout of the season is Champions Nights and will feature an autograph session and fireworks.

Concerts in the Park at Village Park, Kannapolis

When: Friday, Jul. 26: Pam Tillis | Saturday, Jul. 27: Tracy Byrd | Saturday, Aug. 10, KC and the Sunshine Band, 7:00 p.m.
Cost: Admission is free for all

This concert series is a summer-must! This season’s lineup has included performances from the Charlotte Symphony, Gin Blossoms, and many more. Bring a picnic blanket or yard chairs and settle in for a fun evening of great music, and catch the final shows of the Concerts in the Park series at Village Park.

Visit during the week for even more free music in Downtown Kannapolis. During the city’s Thursdays on Main series, you’ll see people dancing, kids playing and families gathered for picnics. And you’ll hear music from fantastic artists in beautiful Veterans Park including Too Much Sylvia on Aug. 8 and Band of Oz on Sep. 12, 2024. Shows begin at 6:00 p.m.

Movies in the Park at Village Park, Kannapolis

When: Friday, Aug. 2, 2024, 8:45 p.m.
Cost: Admission is free for all

Grab you lawn chairs and blankets for an evening under the stars! Bring the kids to watch “Elemental” outdoors in the park on the big screen during the Village Park Movies series.

Cannon Ballers Home Games: $2 Tuesdays, Kannapolis

When: Jul. 30 vs. Salem Red Sox | Aug. 13 vs. Charleston RiverDogs | Aug. 27 vs. Fredericksburg Nationals
Cost: Ticket prices vary – See website

What can beat a summer evening at the ballpark? Maybe one thing — a summer evening at the ballpark with lots of (inexpensive) snacks. When the Cannon Ballers play at home on Tuesdays, guests can enjoy ballpark favorite food and beverage items for just $2 each.

Rockin’ the Burg, Harrisburg

When: Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024 | Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, 6:00 p.m.
Cost: Admission is free for all.

Get ready to rock in the Town of Harrisburg! At Harrisburg Park, all ages can enjoy the outdoors along with live music during this summer series. Opening acts begin at 6:30 p.m. A beer garden and food trucks will be on-site during Rockin’ the Burg, and outside food is welcome to bring (but outside alcohol is not).

Movies in the Park at Harrisburg Park, Harrisburg

When: Friday, Aug. 16, 2024, Activities at 6:30 p.m. | Movie begins at 8:00 p.m.
Cost: Admission is free for all

Spread out a blanket or bring your lawn chairs to this family-friendly event and watch “Tangled” on the big screen outside in Harrisburg Park. Come early at 6:30 p.m. if you want to enjoy kids’ games and free popcorn (who doesn’t?). The movie starts at 8 p.m. Movies in the Park may be cancelled for rain; check early for cancellations.

Cook Out Monster Truck Bash, Concord

When: Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024, Gates open at 4:00 p.m.
Cost: Admission for kids is $10. See website for details on adult tickets and upgrades.

Roaring engines! Crushing metal! Screaming fans! Get ready to get loud at the Monster Truck Bash in Concord. Head to The Dirt Track to watch 2,000-horsepower machines show what they can do — and what they can crush. For even more fun, upgrade your ticket with a monster truck ride-along.
